The Joy of Abstract Oil Paintings and Why I Enjoy Creating Them
Abstract oil painting is one of my creative passions. There’s something magical about staring at a blank canvas and slowly bringing an image to life using vibrant oil paints and bold brushstrokes.
The entire process relaxes me while also firing up my imagination.
I love that abstract art leaves room for interpretation, with each viewer extracting their own meaning from the colours, textures and shapes.
For me, abstract painting is a way to express emotions that can’t quite be captured in concrete forms.
The freedom and versatility make abstract oil painting such a joyful creative outlet. In this blog post, I’ll share why I enjoy creating abstract oil paintings and how this artistic process inspires me.
All the paintings on this blog post are part of my 2023 collection of abstract oil paintings. They are still fresh and wet. I will leave them for approximately 12 months to fully dry before applying a protective coat of varnish.

The Allure of Oil Paints
I also enjoy creating abstract art with acrylics and I’ve experimented with watercolours and other media over the years, but oil paints hold a special place in my heart.
There’s just something about the rich, buttery texture of oil paint that feels deeply satisfying.
Luscious thick texture of oils
Oil paints are a type of paint that consists of pigments suspended in drying oils. I enjoy creating rich layers of colour and texture on the canvas.
Oil paints are also known for their creamy texture, as they blend smoothly and produce a soft and luminous effect.
They are very versatile, as they can be used in different ways, such as thinning with solvents, mixing with mediums or applying directly from the tube.
Oil paints are one of the most popular and enduring mediums for creating a painting, as they offer a wide range of possibilities for artistic expression.
Vibrant, saturated colours
Oils also provide a vibrant, saturated colour that seems to radiate from within the paint itself. “Oil paint is a material that is more beautiful the more you use it, that is to say, the more you make it rich, thick and concentrated,“ explains master painter Claude Monet.
The luminescence of the colour is hard to beat. I’m drawn to bold hues like cadmium red, phthalo blue and lemon yellow straight from the tube.
Blendable and Mixable on Canvas
The blendable quality of oils became apparent the first time I pushed two colours together on canvas and they mingled into a smooth, unified shade.
I can also layer multiple coats of paint, allowing previous layers to subtly influence later ones. This lets me achieve depth and dimension in my abstract oil paintings.
Long drying time allows working paint in layers
In addition, oil paint’s slow drying time enables me to really work and rework the paint while it’s still wet on the canvas.
I can blend, scrape, sculpt and experiment over days instead of just hours or minutes as with other paints. This makes the process of creating abstract oil paintings on canvas more organic and meditative.
Ability to create flowing, textured brushstrokes
Whether applying thick, textured impasto strokes or smooth, delicate glazes, I find oil paint lets me fully express my artistic vision.
The physicality and forgiving nature of oils provide limitless opportunities for creativity. That’s why oil paint remains integral to creating my original abstract art.
Nature’s Abstractions
I find endless inspiration for my abstract oil paintings in the natural world around me. Nature overflows with organic shapes, captivating colours and mesmerising patterns that I aim to capture in my art.
Organic shapes, colours and patterns
A winding path through the woods, undulating hills rolling into the distance, wispy clouds drifting across a blue sky – nature provides a never-ending source of intriguing forms.
Nature possesses a captivating magic that stirs creative passion. The intricate chaos of tangled branches, curled leaves and twisted bark holds an alluring beauty.
Though disorderly, the curves and coils trace Nature’s abstract artistry. The windswept foliage and gnarled limbs sketch a mesmerising portrait of organic elegance.
Devoid of rigid lines, Nature’s freeform wonders evoke imagination’s kindling spark. Within the wild tangles and turned textures lie the muse’s divine designs.
That is fascinating and so inspiring.
Back in my studio, these images and impressions morph into abstract compositions on canvas. I let organic shapes emerge intuitively from the paint instead of trying to replicate exactly what I saw. This allows me to focus on nature’s essence.
That reminds me of a great quote from a great abstract artist: “I had to create an equivalent for what I felt about what I was looking at—not copy it.” – Georgia O’Keeffe.
Textures like weathered bark, rain ripples on a pond, sandy dunes or fibrous leaves make their way into my art too.
I use palette knives, brushes, rags and other tools to recreate the layered, multidimensional textures of the natural environment in paint on canvas. This adds depth and tactile interest to my abstract oil paintings.
Nature’s palette is also endlessly inspiring. I’m drawn to earthy neutrals, verdant greens, chromatic blues and surprising pops of colour like crimson mushrooms or yellow lichen.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Nature always wears the colours of the spirit.” This quote appears in chapter 1 of his essay “Nature,” in which he outlines the values of human communion with nature.
He finds the solitude nature affords beneficial and he calls it a true solitude. He also notes that nature inspires reverence, that its beauties are owned by nobody, regardless of who holds title to the land and that most people, once they pass childhood, never really see nature.
Finally and most importantly, Emerson reconnects with and becomes a “particle” of the universal godhead while communing alone with nature. When he states that “nature always wears the colours of the spirit,” he means that our response to nature is not dictated by nature itself.
How we react to it is symbiotic or dependent on human mood and response. Nature paints a scene, but, Emerson says, the delight it produces emerges from “a harmony of both” nature itself and the human consciousness reacting to it.
Interpreting nature’s moods
Most importantly, I strive to evoke the feelings that nature stirs in me – awe, peace, joy, melancholy, tranquillity and exhilaration.
I once read, “A great artist can paint a landscape and a viewer hear nothing but the wind.” That perfectly sums up my goal of translating nature’s emotional essence into abstract art.
With bold brushstrokes, moody colours and textured layers, I try to recreate what it felt like standing alone amongst towering redwoods, watching the fog creep over the waterhole or stumbling upon a hidden waterfall in the forest.
Abstract oil painting allows me to recreate nature’s soul and energy beyond mere visual recreation. My art is an invitation to immerse yourself in the emotions of the natural world.
Finding focus in nature
I find that escaping into nature is the best way to clear my mind and open myself up to creative inspiration.
The innate peace and quiet helps slow down my thoughts. Without the overstimulation of daily life, I become more observant of the small details around me.
I’ll trek out to a river bank, forest trail or park with my sketchbook. Sitting with my back against a massive tree trunk or perched on a sunny cliffside overlook.
I sketch small studies of anything that catches my eye – the way sunlight filters through the leaves, a patterned rock formation, clouds building on the horizon.
Focusing on carefully observing and capturing nature’s nuances immerses me in a meditative state. As I blur the edges between myself and my surroundings, new abstract concepts start percolating.
Back in the studio, these small sketches serve as the jumping-off point for larger, more expressive abstract oil paintings on canvas.
The textures, colours and forms inspire new interpretations unencumbered by representation.
I strive to convey the serenity, vitality and grounding power I find in nature. Each brushstroke places the viewer one step closer to the peaceful mindfulness I discovered while immersing in nature.
My abstract paintings are portals to escape our modern disconnect from the natural environment.
Conveying nature’s healing power
Most of all, I aim to share the restorative power I find in nature through my abstract art. The natural world has gotten me through difficult chapters of life, providing solace, release and perspective.
I hope my abstract oil paintings similarly provide a sense of comfort and renewal to the viewer.
As Ansel Adams said, “In wisdom gathered over time I have found that every experience is a form of exploration.”
The quote reflects Adams’ belief that every experience, whether positive or negative, can teach us something and help us grow.
As a photographer, Adams was known for his ability to capture the beauty of nature and convey a sense of wonder and awe through his images.
He believed that photography was a way to explore and connect with the world around us and that every moment presented an opportunity for discovery and creativity.
Nature’s wisdom has guided me through life’s ups and downs. With my art, I wish to spread some of that wisdom to help others reflect and heal.
My abstract oil paintings are love letters to the natural world that has shaped me.
Music’s Rhythms
Music is another vital source of inspiration for my abstract oil paintings.
The melodies, rhythms and emotions of music influence the colours, textures and compositions that flow from my paintbrush onto canvas.
Musical inspiration
I like to have music playing in the background when I paint. The tempo, tone and structure of songs impact the feeling of my abstract art.
Upbeat pop or instrumental music elicits energetic, vibrant paintings, while ambient electronic music brings out a more soothing, dreamy quality.
The melody and beat guide the rhythm of my brushstrokes. Lyrics sometimes provide visual imagery to interpret abstractly in paint. I let the music take me on a journey, responding intuitively in that moment.
Different music evokes different moods and emotions that I try to capture in my art. A melancholy ballad may translate into subdued, hazy colours and fluid drips of paint.
Uptempo music can inspire a bold, lively composition with bright clashing colours. Just as music can uplift, relax, energise or console us, my abstract paintings aim to induce similar feelings by channelling music’s essence.
As abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock said, “I usually paint to music. I respond to what I hear.” The quote reflects Pollock’s belief that music and art are interconnected and that the rhythm and energy of music can inspire and influence his painting.
Pollock was known for his unique style of abstract expressionism, which involved dripping and splattering paint onto large canvases.
His work was often described as “action painting,” as it captured the physical and emotional energy of the artist in the act of creation.
Pollock’s use of music while painting was one way in which he channelled this energy and allowed it to flow freely onto the canvas.
Painting the instruments
I also create abstract oil paintings inspired by specific instruments. The resonance of a cello, the twang of a guitar, the trill of a flute – each has its own aural texture that I recreate visually through colour, brushstrokes and layers.
For example, the warmth and depth of a French horn may emerge in my painting through rich oranges, yellows and shimmering brass textures. The breathy tones of a clarinet can transform into airy purple wisps and light airy textures.
Interpreting instruments abstractly is an engaging creative challenge.
Channelling music’s energy
Above all, I strive to capture music’s vibrational energy in my art. As nature photographer Ansel Adams said, “A fine photograph is like a great lyric poem, it projects in a flash the emotion of its subject.“
Similarly, my abstract paintings strive to instantly convey the power and passion that music ignites in me.
Through colour, motion and texture I try to emulate the crescendos, the driving beats, the swelling emotion that music unleashes in our souls.
My abstract oil paintings become conduits for the ineffable magic of music that transcends description. I hope they radiate that intensity of music’s energy to the viewer.
Abstract Oil Paintings – The Creative Process
Creating a new abstract oil painting is an organic, intuitive process for me. I don’t start with a preplanned composition – I let the art emerge through experimentation and flow.
Following my intuition
I begin each painting by quieting my mind and focusing on my intention. As abstract artist Richard Diebenkorn said, “A painting isn’t finished when I put down the brush…it’s finished when…I lose contact with it emotionally.”
I clear my mental chatter so I can tap into raw emotion and impulse.
With an open mind, I make the first strokes and washes on the blank canvas. I pay attention to any colours, shapes or textures I feel instinctively drawn to at that moment.
I follow my creative intuition wherever it leads.
Through this organic process of layering, scraping, dripping and blending paint, original compositions start to take shape.
I work in an exploratory way, without attachment to any preconceived result. I follow insights that arise in the creative process, allowing the abstract oil painting to reveal itself.
Embracing spontaneity
This intuitive approach means every abstract oil painting is a new adventure. I experiment with bold colour combinations, unique textures and chance effects that emerge spontaneously.
Happy accidents and subconscious impulses propel the art forward.
Achieving flow
As I add layers of colour and meaning, I reach a state of creative flow. The tactile act of pushing paint around with brushes, knives and rags blends with the music and my emotions into an immersive experience.
In those magical moments when I’m working my best, everything else fades away. It becomes a dance between me, the paint and the evolving image.
Time seems to stop.
Emerging from this flow state back into reality, I’m left with a complete abstract oil painting brimming with textures, symbols, hidden shapes and mystery for the viewer to discover.
