Maximising the Impact of Large Abstract Art in Your Home
Large abstract art in your home can add a great impact in almost any setting. At home, in office space and even in public places.
Many people are not always sure about hanging and displaying large abstract art, particularly in smaller homes or spaces.
It may seem overwhelming because of its large size which occupies a large wall area in your living room, dining room, bedroom, etc.
This is very true, but here is the key to helping you approach large abstract art in your home in a slightly different but more effective way.
Many people are not keen on large wall abstract art because they are likely thinking of it as a piece of decoration. It must match all the other decorations in the room and it must fit in with all the other colours, furniture, etc.
If you are looking for a piece of art decoration, that’s absolutely fine. There are many mass-produced paintings at very reasonable prices. You can just sit back and view hundreds and thousands of these types of decorative items online and choose whichever suits your decoration.
However, it is an entirely different matter if you are looking for a truly abstract painting that will make a difference to your home, your office and, most importantly, to yourself.
If that’s the case, then the first thing to do is to think of abstract art is more than decoration. In my opinion as an abstract artist, a true small or large abstract art in your home can never be considered a piece of decoration. However, art is subjective and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
Let’s look deeper into the awe-inspiring art world of large abstract art and I’m always happy to share some tips and tricks on how to maximise the impact of large abstract art in your home. Adding these captivating masterpieces to your living space can bring positive transformation.
Understanding the essence of large abstract art in your home
The key to appreciating large abstract art is to embrace the essence of the artwork and the unique distinctive experience it offers.
Abstract art goes far beyond the boundaries of decoration, offering a thrilling and captivating visual experience that evokes and invites thoughts, emotions, feelings and imaginations.
Let’s dive deeper into the magic of large abstract art and how it can beautifully coexist with the intimate space of your home or office.
#1. Embracing the expressive energy
No matter the size of the room, large abstract art has a fascinating presence that can change it. True abstract paintings are not merely decorative items; rather, they are powerful expressions of emotions, concepts and ideas.
Your living room is a sanctuary, a very special space where can surround yourself with the energy and spirit embedded within the artwork.
This is one of the many differences between true abstract art and a piece of decoration. Abstract art is capable of re-boosting positive energy in yourself and your living or working environment.
Earlier I mentioned “concepts”, which are one of the main reasons that abstract art is frequently used to convey various concepts in offices, corporations and public spaces.
#2. Creating a focal point
Large abstract art in your living room can create a striking focal point. When you carefully choose the right piece for you, you can begin to enjoy its vivid colours, bold brushstrokes and intricate details day after day.
Colour psychology plays an important part in influencing our moods. Interior designers are usually well aware of the significance of colours for interior designs and home improvements. Find out more about Wall Art and Colour Psychology.
Colours also have different meanings and associations. We all have our favourite colours, so I wonder What Does Your Favourite Colour Say About You?
The artwork becomes an integral part of your living or working environment. It is a great way to capture the attention of visitors and ignite conversations about its beauty, meaning and impact.
I’ll give you a nice little example. Several years ago, I painted a large abstract painting directly on one of the walls in our dining room, not on a canvas. It measures 3 x 2.5 metres (118” x 98”). Every few months, a guy comes to take the gas and electric metre readings and we always end up talking about the painting. The guy told all his colleagues at work about it.
So now whenever anyone of them comes to take the readings, we always talk about the painting. I’m told that our home has earned the nickname “the house with the big painting on the wall” within that particular department.
#3. Amplifying ambience
Large abstract art in your living room has a remarkable ability to alter the ambience of a space. It can infuse the space with an air of originality, elegance, creativity and thought-provoking beauty.
The artwork’s colours, shapes, lines and textures could interact with your surroundings adding unique character, personality and depth.
Colours, shapes, lines and textures are some of the elements of abstract art. Several other elements make up an abstract painting. Examine those closely as I’m sure they would give a deeper appreciation of abstract art.
#4. Playing with scale
The artwork’s size should not be a deterrent. A large abstract art in your living room can create a visually interesting and dynamic juxtaposition in a small room.
It can enhance the sense of depth, giving your living room the impression of a larger space and more open. The grandeur of the artwork and the intimate setting of your home can inspire awe and interest.
#5. Reflecting your personal journey
When you choose to display large abstract art in your living room, you invite a reflection of your own unique perspective and story into your living space.
Abstract art invites and encourages individual interpretation. Your emotions, experiences, ideas and imaginations can be reflected in the artwork. It creates a significant personal touch to your home, making it a true reflection of your soul.
Let me stop here for a bit and explain the artwork and your personal reflection.
Many people think abstract art directly reflects its artist, which is very true. But a great piece of art can also inspire other people to find their own personal interpretation and it can resonate with each and everyone in their own unique way.
Displaying a large abstract art in your small living room is all about connecting with the artistic spirit and the profound impact it can have on your daily life. It’s about opening up your personal space, where feelings and creativity can flourish into a thrilling and transformational experience.
Choosing the perfect location
The key to finding the ideal spot to display a large abstract art in a small house is about creating an interesting, engaging and harmonious environment that lets the art stand out.
Let’s look at some suggestions for where to put your masterpiece, considering both aesthetics and the transformative beauty of abstract art.
#1. Embrace the intimacy
Every nook and cranny in a small house counts. Look for a space that offers an intimate connection with the painting.
Think about areas where you frequently hang out, such as a cosy reading corner or a space near your favourite armchair or sofa.
This proximity will enhance your personal interaction with the artwork, enabling you to fully absorb and enjoy its energy and spirit.
#2. Utilise vertical space
Large abstract art can be displayed on tall, narrow walls or even in unusual places like in between windows.
You can create a stunning vertical display that maximises the effect of the artwork while minimising the footprint in your small house by utilising these frequently overlooked spaces.
If you have looked around my website pages, you probably have noticed that the majority of my abstract paintings are created vertically much more than horizontally. You can see that clearly in the Acrylic Paintings and the Oil Paintings pages, for example.
Just a small note about vertical, horizontal and square format paintings. Each format creates different effects depending on the subject and the artist’s intention.
For example, the horizontal format works well with landscapes, while the vertical format works better for portraits and figurative paintings. A square format works better where the main subject of the painting is in the centre.
This is only a brief and general overview of the different composition formats. I will write a more detailed blog post about it soon.
#3. Emphasise natural light
Natural light has a fantastic effect on enhancing the colours, textures and overall presence of art. Look for wall spaces in your house that get a lot of natural light during the day, but not direct sunlight.
Consider hanging your large abstract art near a window or in a well-lit hallway. This would maximise the interplay of light and shadow to animate the artwork creating depth and visual interest.
#4. Establish a focal point
Large abstract art has a remarkable power to attract attention and become a captivating focal point in any space.
In your small house, choose a prominent wall where the painting can take centre stage. By carefully selecting a space that naturally draws the eye, you create a focal point that captures the essence of the artwork and showcases its unique expressive qualities and energy.
#5. Create a gallery wall
If you have a collection of smaller abstract paintings, you can create a stunning effect utilising the available space by creating a gallery wall.
I like the effect of a collection of smaller abstract paintings displayed together on the same wall. You can consider placing several smaller paintings in a vertical, horizontal or even a square format depending on the available space.
Whichever format you decide, the collection of the smaller paintings together on the same wall could, in a way, resemble the format of a large painting.
Experiment with different layouts, groupings and sizes to create a dynamic and cohesive composition that satisfies your artistic vision.
It’s not about decoration when deciding where the ideal spot to display your large abstract art in a small house; rather, it’s about creating that amazing engaging and meaningful experience.
As I mentioned earlier abstract art is different from art deco. Abstract art doesn’t necessarily have to match the decoration in your house.
Abstract art makes its own unique statement in any setting, which is the topic I will talk about next.
Abstract art makes a unique statement
Irrespective of size, true abstract art holds its own unique purpose and power. And I will emphasise again and again that abstract art is far beyond mere decoration. It makes a bold unique statement that can captivate and engage viewers on a deeper level.
Let me guide you through the amazing beauty and power of the spirit of true abstract art and why it should be appreciated as more than just a piece of decoration, even in a small house.
#1. Making a statement
Wherever you display a piece of abstract art, you would feel its presence. It commands attention and creates a focal point in almost any space.
Whether displayed in a grand gallery or a small house, it carries its own visual weight and significance.
You would feel how the artwork’s colours, shapes, lines, energy and overall composition make such a statement. A statement that can transform the atmosphere in a room as it evokes emotions and inspires contemplation.
Notice, for example, how great works of art are displayed in a grand professional gallery or museum. You would notice how far apart each painting is displayed from each other. Sometimes, a great piece of painting is displayed on its own in one room, for example, the Mona Lisa.
It is said that the owner of the most expensive painting ever sold in an auction, Salvator Mundi, accepted to display the masterpiece on the condition that it would be placed in the same room as the Mona Lisa. However, that condition was turned down.
This is a good example of how great artworks demand their own space…
#2. Expressing emotion and concept
Abstract art is the language of feelings, emotions, ideas, concepts, beliefs and imaginations that go beyond the boundaries of representation. I have written a comprehensive blog about the meaning and definition of abstract art. If you are interested, have a look at this blog: What is Abstract Art?
Abstract art invites you to delve into your own interpretations, sparking a personal and emotional connection. Whether the artwork is large or small, it carries the same intention and impact allowing you to experience its essence and connect with its message.
#3. Igniting conversation and reflection
True abstract works of art encourage reflection and conversation. It invites you to have a deeper look deep inside and examine the feelings and thoughts it arouses.
Abstract art has magnificent powers to provoke and stimulate deep thinking. It inspires you to reflect on your own perspectives and experiences. It can be a beautiful journey to find out and discover what may resonate with your experiences.
#4. Reflecting individuality and personal taste
Art is subjective. Abstract art is even more subjective. When you choose your large abstract art for your home, it allows you to showcase your unique personality and individuality.
Each piece becomes a reflection of your unique style, preferences and artistic appreciation. The artwork becomes an extension of yourself and who you are, adding tremendous depth and character to your living space.
#5. Creating a meaningful environment
Like most people, I love to create and surround my living and working environment with beautiful and meaningful things.
It’s so strange that we develop this affection for static objects, “things”, like a piece of art. To me, abstract art is much more than just a static two-dimensional object. It’s inspiring and motivating. It speaks to you if you want to listen to its story.
I see so many stories that resonate with my personal experiences. It invites and encourages me with unconditional freedom to make my own stories and interpretations. How brilliant is that!
And that’s part of the fascination of displaying large abstract art in your home.
Always remember that abstract art carries its own intrinsic value. It offers an experience that stimulates emotions, sparks motivation, tells a story and reflects your unique taste.
So, when considering large abstract art for your home, embrace its remarkable power to make a unique statement and create an atmosphere that is truly meaningful and engaging.
Maintenance and preservation
I mainly use oils or acrylics to make my abstract paintings. Each type of medium requires special attention to properly maintain and preserve the artwork.
Taking good care of your abstract pieces ensures their longevity and allows future generations to appreciate their beauty.
Let me take you through some of the basic essential tips for maintaining and preserving your small or large abstract paintings.
#1. Handling with care
When moving or handling your abstract art, make sure to do so with great care. Avoid touching the painted surface directly with your hands as natural oils and dirt can cause damage.
Use clean, lint-free gloves or handle the artwork from the sides or back to prevent accidental smudging or scratches.
#2. Display in optimal conditions
Find a suitable location in your home or office for displaying your art. Avoid areas with direct sunlight or extreme temperature and humidity fluctuations, as these conditions can be detrimental to the artwork.
Ideally, choose a well-ventilated space away from sources of heat, moisture and excessive light exposure.
#3. Cleaning and dusting
Regularly dusting your large abstract art helps to keep them clean and free from surface debris. Use a soft, clean brush or a lint-free cloth to gently remove dust.
Start from the top and work your way down using light strokes. Avoid using water or any cleaning solutions unless you have specific guidance from a professional conservator.
#4. Protecting from physical damage
Protect your paintings from potential physical damage. Avoid placing them in high-traffic areas where they can be accidentally bumped or knocked over.
If you have children or pets, consider hanging the artwork at a height where it is out of reach to prevent accidental damage.
#5. Storing properly
If you need to store your paintings temporarily or for an extended period, it’s crucial to do so with proper care.
Protect the surface by covering it with acid-free paper or a clean, breathable fabric. Store the artwork in a flat, dry and climate-controlled environment, away from potential hazards such as extreme temperatures, humidity, pests or direct sunlight.
These are just basic guidelines to protect your paintings and enjoy them for years to come. The care you provide not only ensures the longevity of the artwork but also preserves its artistic integrity.
