ASMR Abstract Painting – My First Video
This is my first experience in creating an ASMR abstract painting video. My first experience using some of the very basic video technology. Using my wife’s mobile phone, a basic tripod and just natural light.
A new steep learning curve is ahead.
Keep watching to see one of my favourite companions at 20:49. The other two are still asleep, as usual.
As some of you know, I am an abstract artist who enjoys working with acrylic and oil paints. I’ve been wanting to combine my painting with ASMR and create something relaxing and tingly.
Well, I finally took the plunge and made my first ASMR abstract painting video!
The Video Gear
I kept the video gear super simple – just my wife’s phone on a tripod with natural lighting. No fancy mics or lighting kits for this abstract painter!
I figured I’d start basic since this was my first ASMR abstract painting video.
The Learning Curve
Let me tell you, there was a steep learning curve even though I’m very comfortable painting abstract acrylic and oil pieces.
- Balancing the phone and getting the right shot setup took some tinkering.
- And editing out mistakes later was a chore!
But practice makes progress and I know with some more videos under my belt I’ll get better with the tech side.
The Painting Process
The painting itself was so fun and relaxing though. I pulled out some of my favourite acrylic colours – deep black, bright white and rich gold.
These are among my favourite colours and I’ve written a blog about it – What Does Your Favourite Colour Say About You?
The colours I find most soothing.
To create this abstract acrylic piece, I first started by preparing my surface. I used an MDF board that I had previously coated with several layers of gesso to prime it for painting.
An acrylic gesso creates a nice, smooth base layer that acrylic paint adheres very well to. Once my surface was prepped and dry, I gathered my acrylic paints, palette knife and a wide 3-inch brush.
I squirted out some deep black, titanium white and cadmium yellow onto my acrylic palette. Then the fun began!
I used my palette knife to scoop up paint and begin applying it to the board using sweeping motions to create organic shapes and textures.
I wasn’t concerned about realism—just enjoying mixing colours and letting them flow freely across the surface.
Towards the end, I pulled out the wide brush and integrated some bolder vertical and horizontal strokes to balance the composition before declaring the abstract piece complete!
The whole intuitive process was so meditative.
Here is a paragraph describing the background sounds and environment when creating the ASMR abstract painting video:
Ambient Audio for ASMR Abstract Painting
The setting for filming my first ASMR abstract painting video couldn’t have been more perfect.
It was a quiet, sunny late summer morning. I set up my painting supplies in front of the large window in my studio to take advantage of the gorgeous natural light.
I brought out my comfiest painting chair – an old cushioned swivel chair that supports me in front of my easel for hours without backache.
As I settled in to begin painting, the soft background sounds added a lovely unintentional ASMR atmosphere.
Since my studio faces the side street, I could hear the occasional passing car swooshing back and forth.
The quiet ambient sound of cars passing by, along with the morning sunbeams filtering across my canvas, created the perfect relaxing, tingly environment for me to freely create and get lost in acrylic pouring.
The footage captured me deeply focused yet calm as the paint swirled and dripped. That soothing, cosy painting session truly sets the mood for my debut ASMR abstract painting video!
A Feline Assistant
At one point my sweet cat Louis even hopped up to inspect my work!
Furry Supervision from Louis!!!
As I became immersed in painting the board, I suddenly noticed our lovely black cat Louis came to visit me in my studio to investigate, as usual.
My inquisitive feline likes to supervise all studio projects in his domain.
As I continued manipulating the paint, Louis studied my brushstrokes intently with bright green eyes. He enthusiastically chirped encouragement when colours blended together nicely.
And he wasn’t shy about giving critiques either – an insistent meow if too much white overpowered a section. I explained my artistic vision to him as I worked to gain his sage approval.
We artists must answer to our muses after all!
Having Louis’ beloved furry company made the session even more enjoyable. Cats and art simply go hand in hand!
His curious presence and comic commentary on my creative process provided even more tangy sensory nostalgia that I hope also comes through in the ASMR video.
I’ve added a few touches of deep red, orange and blue.
And here is the finished painting at this stage.
I still prefer abstract painting better than creating videos!
Any advice on video editing for a complete novice is most welcome…
Final Thoughts about my ASMR Abstract Painting
So that’s a little behind-the-scenes for my first ASMR abstract painting video adventure!
It was such a pleasure to combine two things that relax me – painting and ASMR triggers. I can’t wait to keep practicing and improving the technical side most of all.
I’d love to hear from you guys about my first attempt at an ASMR abstract painting video!
What did you think of the sounds, visuals and pacing?
Did it have that relaxing, tingly vibe I was going for?
I’d also be curious which parts were most enjoyable ASMR or soothing for you personally. And I’d of course be humbled to hear your artistic impressions of the final abstract painting itself that resulted from the painting session too.
What shapes and textures catch your eye?
How do the colour combinations make you feel?
I always appreciate feedback from my kind viewers as I continue this creative adventure. So leave me comments galore!
Let me know what you envision me painting next. And let’s have some fun conversations about the intersection of art and ASMR moving forward!
