This Abstract Painting
Modern abstract oil painting is amazingly beautiful art as it is open to different interpretations by different people. However, many people usually spend less than a minute looking at a single piece of artwork. Most, spend no more than a few seconds.
In 2008 a study was carried out at a New York museum with the conclusion that museum visitors spend less than 30 seconds viewing a piece of artwork – the average being 17 seconds. This conclusion led to the birth of the Slow Art Movement.
It’s absolutely fine to browse through several modern abstract oil painting artworks. But when you stop to spend 5 to 10 minutes with one piece of artwork, it can change how you see, how you think and how you appreciate that artwork.
Seeing requires your brain to direct your eyes to ask questions and to process information. Look at the artwork first without checking its information or who created it, as this could influence your view. Just enjoy moving your eyes around the artwork. Then, pick up a starting point – anything that might catch your eye. Why did your eyes notice that, try to figure it out.
Is the red brushstrokes or the bright yellow that caught your eye in this painting? These brushstrokes are in the lower third on the left-hand side.
It’s a busy modern abstract oil painting with many short colourful brushstrokes. Are your eyes now wandering to the yellow ochre on the top third on the right-hand side, or maybe seeing the bright light of white brushstrokes scattered in the painting?
Do you feel you want to have a closer look and see the texture of the brushstrokes or the different layers of the paints? How many layers can you see?
Life can be hectic and finding the time to make a new beginning can also be extremely challenging.
White thick brushstrokes scattered on top of other colours, clearly stand out adding a little peace and calm to the noise in the foreground and background spaces. But it seems to be competing against some of the other vibrant colours, like red and yellow. To me, white is a beautiful colour that attempts to promote the possibility of a new beginning.
I’m sure we all like a bit more space in our lives and perhaps we would also welcome the opportunity of a new beginning.
