This Abstract Painting
Abstract art texture in painting plays a major part in any painting. I like to add a lot of textures to my paintings as they add great depth to the visual response. Texture in abstract painting transforms a 2-dimensional visual expression onto a touchable 3-dimensional object.
Texture can be added as a true texture or as an illusion to give that feeling of depth. I use both methods sometimes on the same painting.
You can create abstract art textures through various techniques. My preferred texture techniques are using thick painting with a palette knife or a rough brush.
A rough brush can demonstrate clearly the direction and movement of the brushstrokes which adds a great effect to the composition.
Using a palette knife is a completely different style and technique. With a palette knife, you could move a lot of paint in any direction you wish creating a thick or thin layer of paint.
In this abstract acrylic painting, I created the texture by mixing acrylic paints with gesso. Gesso is a type of primer that is commonly used to prepare the surface of your painting before applying any paint.
It dries very stiff and provides an excellent surface to paint. Without gesso, the paint would be easily absorbed by the canvas fabric or paper.
I used shades of grey-green in the lower layers of the painting and added several other layers of warm colours. The slight contrast highlights the texture really well in this painting.
Different values of yellow and orange dominate the top layers with a few touches of one of my favourite colours, white.
To further enhance the weight and depth, I used a touch of blue and a mix of blue and black.
The joy of creating an abstract painting is extremely rewarding. To actually see how the painting evolves from start to finish is a fantastic process.
Making a start on a blank canvas can be quite challenging for some artists. To me, it is always a new beginning not knowing exactly where it starts, where it is heading and how it is finished.
That journey, in itself, is something I always look forward to in every painting I create.
It is the one activity that I don’t have to think about, but just let go and see the result after an exciting beautiful art journey.
